Another way to do it, is to DMA rake a piece of memory across a GPIO pin. Such that you draw any series of pulses you want, across that pin, and you do it when you trigger the DMA to start raking. Good idea, assuming you know which it is. What if you are wasted spark with half sync, should you then be allowing fuel/air into the exhaust unburned for a cycle always before reallowing ignition? You get back the energy from drawing the vacuum against the throttle plate, because that vacuum helps lift the piston on the compression stroke. Pumping losses are from pumping.
